Search Engines

Clusty organizes the links into groups on the left hand side of the screen, sometimes making it possible to find charitable donations grouped.

Google has more comprehensive image links.

Wealth Engine: First use the simple search feature, and seek a report for either Real Estate or Political Contributions. When you have a hit, click on the advanced search feature. Those items that have a quality of match of 10-11 are most reliable. Verify any information given with other tools, and note whether the giving range is based solely on the real estate estimates. Eliminate any obviously wrong elements and recalculate the giving range.

Guidestar: Seek a non-profit entity, then find its most recent 990. The names of directos are usually in the final pages of the filing, following the list of recent grant recipients.

PACER: Gives access to legal cases, including bankruptcy and civil proceedings nation-wide. Requires a log-in and credit card number, and there is a per page charge of 8 cents once $10 worth of pages have been queried (125 pages).

Property

Indorgs and BRB: These provide links to local assessors. Some assessors are not represented but can be located by searching in Google for the town name and "assessors." Some towns have stopped putting the name of the property owner on the web so you can only search if you know the property address.

Zillow: This service provides information on property nation-wide. It was recently reviewed by the Wall Street Journal (Feb 2007) which reports that it is most reliable for middle-valued standard homes, not so useful for low or high end, and not at all useful for valuations on "one-of-a-kind" homes. Also, some regions are not well-covered by this service. Information should be verified through the local assessors.

Mapquest: gives map of the area based on the address.

Google maps: Gives more versatile map and the ability to plug more than one address in simultaneously to show proximity.

Phones

Anywho and Switchboard: Both provide phone number look-ups by last name and state. Try only using the last name, if it is an unusual name, or the last name and the first initial if the last name is common. Cell phones are not indexed.

Reverse Lookup: Enter the phone number to find the name. Cell phones are not indexed.
